Saturday June 4, 2016

We started the day with breakfast at the hotel. What an incredible spread. A real mixture of Norwegian and much more. Smoked salmon, pickled herring, eggs, bacon, waffles, all kinds of cold meat and cheese, fruits and yogurt.
We only had one day in Oslo so we started off with a hop on hop off tour so that we could see the main sights in the city and get an idea of where things were. I will have to go back as there were many places I would love to visit.
I had problems with my pictures on the bus tour but have a couple that are reasonable.

University.

Cool buildings.

Many boats in Oslo.
And large cruise ships.

Opera house. It looks like an ice burg and you can walk up on the roof as it starts out from ground level.

Royal palace. Much less security than Buckingham Palace.  They do a change of guard there every day too though.
Oslo had some beautiful flowers. This tower of petunias appeared to be be a stack of pots each a little smaller than the one below.
Time for lunch.  Today was fish and chips.
Next stop the History Museum. Another great museum with many different displays including an interesting temporary display on body adornment.

A very old and intricate lock and key.
Some very ancient shoes.
Very intricate detail on the door of a Stave church.
They had a whole section on the Arctic and the Sami people which was very interesting.
The inside of an igloo.

Another display showed how they got many gold bars out from Oslo during WW II so that the Nazis didn't get it. It sounded like quite the operation.

We had to go to the station to pick up our tickets for the next day as it was the weekend and we would be leaving at 6:25am.
It was more like a mall than a station but we got our tickets and checked out where we could get coffee and breakfast to go in the morning. We have become quite well acquainted with 7-11 by now. They seem to be in most of the stations and have coffee and fresh baked goods and sandwiches.

We met this fellow outside the station.

We wandered down a pedestrian street and happened upon the end of a parade. I don't know how these groups had the energy in the heat as they danced while we watched for about an hour and a half.
I guess most of what I took is video. Not sure how to add that here.

We had supper in a sidewalk cafe and could watch the world go by. We were in Oslo on a very busy day as it was Music Festival 2016. A day when there were venues all around the city with all kinds of bands and music playing all for free.
And of course some Norwegian beer.
After eating we went to listen to a couple of the bands and wander through the harbour. We found a boat with the same name as one of our Danish ancestors.

Then we called it a night. Back to our "Smart" room. This was the smallest room I have stayed in.  I am not sure if you can tell from the pictures just how small it is. I do understand there maybe smaller rooms such as the pod type rooms where you basically have a bed.
Picture taken from door bathroom on right.
Picture taken from on bed. The table folded down from wall. My pink suitcase is behind the bathroom door which had open into room.
Bathroom.

Everywhere we went they seemed to be looking for ways to keep the cost of rooms down. This was my least favourite.
